Course Leader

As a Course Leader based at The Backstage Centre on the Level 4 Professional Diploma in Technical and Production Practice for the Creative Industries, Pete is responsible for course design, teaching and assessment.

He works closely with Louise, the General and Technical Manager, to ensure students have access to all facilities and securing meaningful work experience and shadowing opportunities, either in-house or with external clients.

With over 20 years’ experience working in education, Pete is able to maintain a balance of industrial practice alongside his teaching commitments. He has worked as a musician playing in across the world, performed on stage and in independent films as an actor and he has production managed many events over the years.

Pete enjoys bringing a multi-skilled approach to the learning environment to give his students the best opportunities for employment and career development.

What is a tip that you’d have for someone joining the team?
Try and bring the enthusiasm you have for what you do and that’ll come out on the shoot. If you’re enthusiastic about the things you do, that’ll spread and be noticed.

What would you say is the hardest part of your job?
Trying to meet all the students’ demands. It can be quite tricky, but it’s also maintaining and developing contacts and building good and lasting relationships. Keeping relationships hot and people on board with your vision is the hardest bit and something I try to teach our students – ultimately, it could be the thing that lands a student’s next gig, help develop the course, or create opportunities for students past and present.

What makes working at The Backstage Centre so amazing?
Seeing the students doing their work and realising their potential. When they’re doing the work and you’re sitting back and watching the fruits of your labour, it is really great to see and very rewarding.
